Sunday Morning Worship: The Good Goodbye: Flower Communion

  • Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike Oak Ridge, TN, 37830 United States (map)

This Sunday, join us in person or on Zoom for morning worship and our series, the Good Goodbye. This is our Flower Communion service, an annual ritual that celebrates beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. Originally created in 1923 by Unitarian minister Norbert Capek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, the Flower Ceremony was introduced to the United States by Rev. Maya Capek, Norbert's widow. In this ceremony, everyone in the congregation brings a flower. Each person places a flower on the altar or in a shared vase. The congregation and minister bless the flowers, and they're redistributed. Each person brings home a different flower than the one they brought.

At the end of June, Lead Minister Rev. Jake Morrill will be leaving ORUUC after 19 years of ministry with us; he's stepping away to spend more time with family, and to focus on writing, organizational coaching, and life. Rev. Tandy Scheffler, our minister of Care and Connection, will be retiring after 25 years with ORUUC. We welcome you to be part of this Good Goodbye time with us.

In-person worship begins at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. The service will also be streamed live on Zoom for those who wish to participate from home or wherever you may be.

There will be no Youth Faith Formation classes this Sunday. Adult Faith Formation classes take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15. p.m. To find out more about our classes, visit our website: http://www.oruuc.org/religious-education and http://www.oruuc.org/faith-formation-for-adults.
